City of Jackson employees undergo active shooter training

city hall spring-summer

Jackson City Hall closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon so City of Jackson employees could attend active shooter training at City Hall. Dozens of employees received training from the Jackson Police Department about what they should do to stay safe during an active shooter threat.

While there have been two high-profile shootings in the past week, Jackson’s training has been planned for several weeks. During Wednesday’s training, officers educated employees on the potential activities of a shooter and how employees should respond. Active shooter drills were also conducted by employees at City Hall.

The Jackson Police Department often educates City-based schools and organizations on how they can prepare for a mass shooting situation. Chief Elmer Hitt suggests all local families, schools, businesses and organizations should educate themselves on how to react to a possible active threat. “An active shooter incident is a scary and terrible situation that hopefully no organization will have to experience. However, with proper active shooter training there may be a chance to prevent, or at least minimize the damage of a tragic event,” Chief Hitt said.

The Police Department will continue to work with City employees on more safety measures.
