Jackson Fire Department using new rescue stabilization tools

Firefighters at the Jackson Fire Department are working with the latest stabilization tools when they go to rescues at a vehicle crash or fire scene. Two sets of the tools, called Rescue 42s, were recently acquired by the fire department and put into service.

Firefighter Chad Everett says when firefighters go to a crash scene where a patient needs to be extricated from a vehicle, firefighters will use these tools to anchor the vehicle to the ground to keep it in place.  “If the car is flipped on its side or in an awkward position we can stabilize the car and keep it from moving.

Stabilization is essential to make sure the vehicle does not fall on responders, and rescue efforts do not move the vehicle. In crash situations, we are concerned about the patient’s spine being damaged. So providing further stabilization will help make sure the patient is not moved inappropriately. They’re definitely good tools to have,” said Firefighter Everett.

Some neighboring fire departments are already using Rescue 42s, so Jackson firefighters have seen how they can help in an emergency. Firefighter Everett says the tools can also be used at a fire scene if a structure needs to be stabilized. When it comes to finding yourself trapped in a vehicle following a crash, firefighters say you should stay inside the vehicle, unless there is a fire or some other immediate danger. “Trying to remove yourself from the vehicle can cause further harm to yourself. Definitely stay put and we’ll get you out,” Firefighter Everett said.
